PharmBioTec gGmbH is a non-profit company specialized in pharmaceutical contract research. High quality services are offered in the preclinical development phase. These include the development of new formulations, analytical services and in vitro testing of potential APIs to assess safety and efficacy.
PharmBioTec gGmbH has the goal to replace animal testing in drug development. Our activities aim at developing new cell-based and non-cell-based systems together with partners from industry and research institutes. These new methods enable targeted and human-relevant pharmaceutical formulation development.
We support other non-profit institutions such as Saarpfalz-Werkstatt für angepasste Arbeit gGmbH to share our success in the best possible way for the common good.
As a research partner, we are the right choice when it comes to innovative developments for the treatment of skin, lung and intestinal diseases. We can look back on numerous national and international projects, the success of which can be seen in the form of publicly accessible publications.
Numerous industrial partners have found their way to us to conduct proof of concept studies. Such studies are carried out on behalf of or as part of a joint research project and are usually aimed at new methods or product developments.
We let our experience flow directly into the training of young scientists. We offer the possibility to do internships and bachelor & master theses in our company. In teaching, we constantly strive for cooperation with universities to let students participate in our findings.

Research Projects
PharmBioTec gGmbH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to researching alternatives to animal testing. Our focus is on so-called New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), which include both ex vivo and in vitro methods for testing new drugs.

PharmBioTec gGmbH is specialized in the development of innovative and customized formulations for a wide range of pharmaceutical applications. Our portfolio includes inhalation systems, creams, nasal sprays, and modern delivery systems such as innovative nanocarriers. We combine scientific expertise with practical development to create the optimal dosage form for every active ingredient.
Thanks to our many years of experience collaborating with industry and research partners, we are able to develop precisely tailored formulation strategies in the preclinical development phase. Our goal is to make the best possible use of your active ingredient’s properties while addressing potential challenges early on. This includes, in particular, limiting factors such as low solubility or restricted permeability, for which we develop targeted solutions.
A main focus of our work is on the development and application of alternative testing systems to avoid costly and ethically questionable animal testing. Our formulations are therefore tested on specially established in vitro and ex vivo models. Depending on the research question, we use, for example, lung or intestinal cell culture models, skin models, or dental test systems. This allows us to make reliable statements about the efficacy, tolerability, and performance of your formulation at an early stage.

PharmBioTec gGmbH has been located at the Pharmacampus in Schiffweiler since March 2023. The new laboratories were set up here and the move from the Sciencepark took place in March.
In the new environment, high-performance equipment is available and there is plenty of space to conduct accurate research. The team around the competences is growing, and we are looking forward to reach new goals together.
